In a Broken Dream Comes Full Circle

Originally recorded in 1969 as a favour to famous DJ John Peel and his Dandelion record label, vocalist extraordinaire Rod Stewart laid down his awesome vocals for Python Lee Jackson’s “In a Broken Dream”.  Python Lee Jackson were an Australian band who had attracted John Peel’s attention but on the recording session had struggled with vocals. John Peel then called his mate Rod Stewart to assist, and the now legendary singer did just that.

Initially released on the Youngblood  label in 1970 the record failed to attract attention, however, after Stewart had gained international fame with his album “Every Picture tells a Story” and worldwide best selling single “Maggie May” the track was re-released in 1972 and reached peak position in the UK charts at number 3.

Fast forward to 2015 and rapper A$AP Rocky’s Mark Ronson produced reworking of the song on the track “Everyday” from his platinum album At. Long. Last., bringing the attention of the track to a different audience in a new genre.

In 2025 we come full circle with the inclusion of the original recording on Rod’s Ultimate Hits package released in June 2025.

The Policeman Laughs Again!

UK: 'The Adventures of a Laughing Policeman': 99 years old and still iconic

If anyone doubted the value of iconic copyrights, a 99 year old English Music Hall song is currently soundtracking three campaigns.

‘The Adventures of a Laughing Policeman’ was written at the start of the roaring 20s, when Billie Grey penned the song for her husband English Music Hall artist Charles Penrose, who later recorded and performed the song.

The song is now owned by New Songs Administration Limited (NSA).

NSA’s Managing Director, John Fogarty said, “This song is very close to my heart.”

‘The Adventures of a Laughing Policeman’ can be heard as part of a promotion of China's digital taxi App DiDi Chuxing, which tech giant Apple backed with an investment of one billion US dollars. In Taiwan, Pizza Hut has used the song in their latest ad campaign. Most recently, original recording can be heard in Aldi’s UK Price Match online campaign.

At nearly 100 years old, “The Laughing Policeman” is still earning its keep in the 21st century.

Rod Goes to Bollywood

The second highest grossing Bollywood movie of 2019 features NSA composition, “Everyday” as recorded by rap king, A$AP Rocky, and featuring Knight of the Realm, Sir Rod Stewart.

The film is Gully Boy, an Indian musical drama about a poor college student with a love of rap music.  Growing up in the slums of Mumbai, protagonist Murad writes poems and lyrics to express himself and his dissatisfaction with his life’s circumstances. With dreams of fame, he participates in underground rap battles and gains notoriety on social media before embarking on his dream career.  The film is inspired by the stories of real-life Indian rappers Divine and Naezy.

“Everyday” was produced by Mark Ronson and samples Rod Stewart’s vocals from the classic recording, “In a Broken Dream” (another NSA composition), which features on most of Rod’s “Best of” compilation albums and is regarded by many as one of his finest moments (out of many).  “Everyday” was previously featured in the film, Baywatch, and this placement takes Rod from the beach to Bollywood.

New Songs Administration’s catalogue includes an impressive array of compositions, including a share of worldwide mega-hit “Uptown Funk”, and compositions “Here Comes Summer” (UK #1 in 1959), “Almost There” recorded by Andy Williams, and the English National Treasure, “The Laughing Policeman”. NSA also administers the A. Schroeder catalogue with its wealth of songs recorded by Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Cliff Richard, and well-known boy band, The Beatles.

“NSA’s managing director, John Fogarty, says, “This [placement] shows that music has no boundaries.  In the first instance, a rap god samples a rock god, and then the new recording ends up in an Indian movie about hip hop — fantastic!”

Welcome to Bollywood, Rod!

John Fogarty’s New Songs Administration acquires the Lynn Hatch Music Catalogue

John Fogarty’s New Songs Administration (NSA) has acquired the Lynn Hatch Music catalogue from composer and recording artist, Jerry Keller.

Amongst the works acquired is the 1958 worldwide hit, “Here Comes Summer”, which Keller wrote and recorded. The song reached No. 1 on the UK charts and No. 14 in Billboard, and was covered by various artists including Cliff Richard and The Dave Clark Five.

Also included is “Almost There”, co-written by Keller & Gloria Shayne, which was a major hit for Andy Williams in 1965, reaching No. 2 in the UK and also covered by Brenda Lee.

Keller also wrote the English language versions of the songs comprising the score of the classic French film, “A Man and a Woman” (“Un Homme et une femme”), which are also part of the catalogue.

NSA was formed in 2014 prior to the sale of Minder Music by Fogarty to BMG.  Minder Music included a treasure trove of works recorded by The Gap Band, Fatback, Jimmy Castor, Blondie, Ace, The Impressions, The Fall, and many others.

NSA was founded to handle works retained by Fogarty after the sale of Minder, including a share of worldwide mega-hit “Uptown Funk”. Amongst the other works owned by NSA are Python Lee Jackson/Rod Stewart’s “In A Broken Dream” (publishing and master), A$AP Rocky’s “Everyday”, and the English National Treasure, “The Laughing Policeman”.

NSA also administers the A. Schroeder catalogue with its wealth of songs recorded by Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Cliff Richard, and well-known boy band, The Beatles.
